Is there a way of doing this? I've set the wallpaper to slideshow in control panel but the wallpapers don't rotate.

Well, there are two ways to do this. One is bbstyle and the other is bbslideshow. Read instructions

not sure why, but the windows 7/8 slideshow is kinda broken.

actually the images do rotate, but the background is not redrawn until they are forced

Rather than making a new thread I'll ask this here too. How do I remove the icons and empty space next to the menu labels?

You open blackbox.rc with a text editor and look for the line

session.menu.icon.size:                 30 or something

You substitute 30 with 0 and restart.
