Getting Windows 10 to play well with bbZero?

Best Answer ph34rb0t , 01 August 2015 - 01:36 PM

It's a bit of a workaround having to use Win+E as opposed to Right Click / Explorer, but I can deal with it.

The Explorer entry in my menu.rc reads "explorer.exe /e" and correctly launches File Explorer without launching the entire shell.

Why don't you use FreeCommander?

An alternative file manager...hm, not a bad idea.

So I decided on a whim to upgrade to Windows 10 (mostly because OneDrive was getting an actual desktop app rather than that Metro crap).

I'm having trouble getting bbZero installed as a shell without explorer.exe opening up.

I sign in, bbZero loads up, everything looks good, and when I open menu, click Explorer (hoping to get File Explorer), I get the Windows Explorer shell.

What steps should I take to solve this? (I've already tried ShellOn, reinstalling, etc.)

See screenshot.

I have not used 10 yet, so I guess I won't be of much help, but I presume you have tried to set BB as shell, either via its install feature or with the help of ShellOn. Seems like there is a trigger that tells explorer to run on top of a shell without actually killing the shell. By opening menu and clicking on Explorer, I guess you mean BB's main menu by right clicking on the desktop, right? There's a command there that tells Windows to look for explorer in a certain place and  with a certain string. Try a more direct approach: BBKeys must be running, so try Win+E instead and see what goes. Also, does the shell revert to Explorer with any other application?

I have tried installing as shell and with the help of shellon (all with administrator rights, of course).

And yes, when I right click on the desktop, the bblean menu comes up. Everything looks good. i can launch programmes without hassle. However, I click Explorer, and the Windows Explorer Shell comes up.

I can use Win+E without hassle also, when BBKeys is on, although it's annoying because of habit.

If I go to bsetroot.exe and set shell without logging out, Windows Explorer disappears. It is only bblean running seemingly, but if I minimise all programmes (Win+D), the Windows desktop appears (with Windows menu's and all).

There has to be a way out of this.

I use Windows 10 x64 with BBZero. Installed it via BSetshell for my current user and it works. I am, however, permanently logged in as Administrator, and did not run into trouble when it came to switching shells with BSetshell. Windows Defender did conflict with BBZero during use though. I could not make any changes to bbLeanSkin without BBZero freezing up during restart. Disabled Defender and replaced it with Antivir and all is well (and faster!).

(Unless you disable system file protection in Antivir, however, BSetshell won't be able to switch shells.)

My configuration passes the WIN+D and WIN+E tests.

I currently have not touched my setup since the beginning of my post. My settings are identical to yours:

Antivirus + Windows Defender do NOT block any blackbox files.

bbZero is set as shell.

I disabled Explorer from my blackbox menu, which forces me to use Win+E to bring up File Explorer. On the upside, Windows Shell has not come up since.

It's a bit of a workaround having to use Win+E as opposed to Right Click / Explorer, but I can deal with it.

You can create a shortcut using bbinterface to simply click on a button and get Explorer (which isn't the best of file browsers, imho. Why don't you use FreeCommander?)

You're welcome!

By the way: Should you find that BBZero and File Explorer is a rather bad combo (FE won't auto-refresh folder contents for me when BBZero is the sole shell), give CubicExplorer a try. My first choice was Explorer++, but the current version will crash whenever you right click in an empty space.

I tried Cubic Explorer and I really like. Simple, but customisable.

How do I replace File Explorer with Cubic Explorer?

You can't - and don't delete it, it's the native Windows shell. You can add a command to call up Cubic Explorer in the menu, or create a BBKeys shortcut, or create a bbinterface button that points to it. I personally use FreeCommander, it's much better than Cubic and it refreshes for me. You can also take a look at Nomad.

Check CE's settings, there's an item that will set it as the default file manager. But retain a link to "explorer.exe /e" somewhere in case you need it as a backup (or want to update CE).

Didn't know that - but then, I don't use CE. Thanks for sharing knowledge! :)

Sure thing, that's what forums are for! :)

Another issue to look out for is that Windows (10) might not update some event logs for which the presence of Explorer.exe as a process is needed. Example: Tracking boot time.

Hey guys, I don't know if anyone is still interested in this, but my solution the the problem of explorer.exe launching the entire windows shell was to create a batch file in the blackbox directory that calls start C: then I link to it in the blackbox menu.rc file [exec] (Explorer) {startexplorer.cmd}.

Good idea! Care to post the entire contents of the batch file?
