OK, so what is the thing with bbzero?

and also, I backed off again with the blackbox, bblean and xoblite series, they really crush my systems. they either load really slow, or not at all (i can still ctrl-alt-del). so until I get that figured out...

and even if they work, I cannot get them to leave firefox alone on the title bar skinning argh!! :-)

Hi klyxmaster,

welcome aboard. For a better overview I recommend you to stick to one topic per thread since you seem to have several issues with different blackbox alternatives. If you use any Windows between XP and 10 you should be able to run bbZero without any problems. It's in active development and has many bugs/issues fixed where bbLean, Xoblite etc. discontinued and didn't fix them.

If it still doesn't work, post some information about your system like what windows version you use, if you modified it already in any way and what exact version of blackbox you tried. Also post more information about the symptoms of the errors/crashes. Does it show an error message or does simply happen nothing?

Hope this helps helping you solve your problems. :)

Greetings!

interesting.. lemme "git" BZ (hey a pun!) and I'll see how that performs

I used on laptop

Vista x64 (8gb) (HP DV7 1020us)

640gb HDD

nvidia 9600M GT (not supported anymore /sigh)

and Main pc is a mutt

Win 7 x64, 16gb

25TB HDD(s) (yes this double as a server)

Nvidia 750 GT Ti (2gb)

Oddly both suffer the same effects of the BB series. It stalls after login to a black screen - then nothing. If I tap ctrl-alt-del a silloette of the slit shows but that is it, I think have to warm boot to get control (by returning via shellOn to explorer).

That is about it.

Welcome Klyxmaster, have you dloaded the latest release of bbZero from these forums?

As for the skinning of Firefox, that's the bbLeanSkin plugin. Just deactivate it like I did, you won't really miss it.

If you still want to use it, I suggest you get another browser.

No I like compiling my own stuff :-)

(Like all my game servers WOTLK, Mist, and vanilla, FFXI and a few others)

Sadly this is what I got with BBZero

========== Build: 23 succeeded, 47 failed, 0 up-to-date, 1 skipped ==========

I use vs2014 So not sure if that has something to do with it. I do not want to change anything because all my other projects compile fine. BBZERO was just puking up warnings and errors and this is the only project I have that uses cmake, so may be something with that I have wrong. (it was all read but configured ok)

So is there a section where I can hash this out?

and in the mean time I guess I'll DL the binary here LOL,

Wish I knew more C++, one of the few languages, I never got into. php, pascal, basic, sql to name a few are my cup-o-tea

Welcome back, old friend.

Guys, klyxmaster is iamriki, one of the oldest users of Blackbox/BBLean.

And, btw, BBZero works fine for most of us, but then the majority uses Win 10 nowadays.

o I see! win10?

that would make a good topic for debate in the "other forums" LOL!!

I max out at win7 (had 10 then dumped it). Love xp pro x64 and vista x64. Love the simplicity and light weight.

and both of those work amazing with all versions of BB, with little to know problems. win 10 hates people messing with their shells LOL. It's in control.

May I ask why you dumped 10? I mean it's extra fast and rock steady. That from a guy who used XP till last year :)

well in short ( have to run to work)

It is a massive "spy" app. there is a guy, dont have his name right off the top of my head, but he made a small app that you can run that will run off about 27+ win10 built in apps that "watch" and "monitor" you with one click. When you get win 10, or install it, these apps are all turned on by default. There is way much more problems with win10 than that, but its a good IMPORTANT start to let you know why *I* do not use it.

and from the posts here, and many other places on the net, W10 is very problematic with games as well as apps such is BBx (did you notice that without jumping through hoops, you do not have access to your bios anymore???

There is a bonus though, they did bring back DOS LOL.

here is a good read

http://www.slate.com..._plug_them.html

Another big one for me, lets face it, WIN10 is designed with touch screens in mind - as well as tablets. Thus the metro starting screen and desktop. Everything about it screams touch screen.

naw,

I'll keep my win7 - that OS is really rock solid. And it runs very smooth with my gaming win10 has gotten so big, all but the most serious geeks, haven't a clue what's under the hood

Again, just my preference. Currently, with the exception of the big tower I use for gaming, everything is xp pro, x64 and x86. The only reason it is not on the tower is because of driver issues.

:-D

that is just a small percentage of the nightmares I experienced with w10.

NOTE TO OTHERS

this post is not meant to deter others from W10. I encourage people to use what they like and what they are comfortable with. These are just my preferences, and views through my personal experiences that allowed me to make an informed decision. Windows systems, like linux distros will always have an eternal debate on which is better. It all really boils down what you are doing, then find a system that matches.

O, and I forgot to add - there is a (intentional although supposedly innocent in functionality) key logger built into win 10. there is a way to turn it off, but it is hidden :-)

hmm maybe I should make a thread here - how to protect yourself against win10 LOL!!!

hey welcome back. nothing like home.

I'm a bit like you but i've long lost any hope to protect anything, I learned from drug dealers in movies a very interesting term and concept: Burner phone. I've applied it to computers too. what i consider private is never stored on a networked computer and everything is "burnable"

I dont even run AV's on my system. never have. Just a personal experience, but it seems those with AV's seem to have issues.

I jumped on Malwarebytes and told them the follwoing screen shot is a fail. it did NOT protect their system. and now it has to clean up what it MISSED!! That stuff (in the image for example) is actually on the target computer! It was not blocked.

That is how many of the malware, spyware and ransomeware get away with stuff. I am sure somewhere up the food chain these guys sleep together. I know many people who actually PAID for those 800# to help them!!!

What the AV's SHOULD be saying is

".. Congratulations for using AV[xx] We were able to block xyz trojan from attacking your system." Instead of

"oops Sadly were were unable to fully protect your system,  here is a list of malware we failed to protect you from, let us see if we can clean it up!" der!!

Another thing I tell my friends/family and collegues, is where are you surfing that you need protection? Stop going there! duh!

If millions of people like myself can surf the net just fine w/o the need for AV's, so can everyone else. :-) All my drives are disposable, if I loose it, i can replace what was on it because I back up my own stuff on my own separate drives (LAN access only)

and @Troll is absolutely correct - keep private stuff off your pc and don'e worry if you loose it. if it is important, back it up.

Cheers

gawd - that almost sounded like a rant LOL!!!

ps

I did get two fine pieces of malware in my lifetime - both were when I was trying to get a stubborn peice of software (hint hint) but I prove my point - my fault LOOL!!

Yeah used XP64 for years Windows 10 is the first OS they've done since XP/XP64 that I really felt was a solid OS overall the cut down a lot of the bloat or provide some means of doing so and on top of better driver support compared to XP64 it's got Trim and DX11 and DX12 both of which are pretty important these days for games. It's not w/o some faults, but overall it's not too shabby though I still really think they could stand to optimize it further top to bottom to behave more lean and mean for people that can do w/o certain features.

It's not the bloat that's bad. For me its the focus on touch screen layout (and default), and the many built in tracking apps that are turned on by default. Turning some off, actually have adverse affects on the system (cortina??). Not to mention the lack of control you now have on the system, or if you even want to dump WIN10 off your rig completely is not as simple as putting an install disk in and reboot - thats not allowed in 10 w/o some serious hoops to by pass and turn off.  Overall (IMO), the OS is very controlling. They make is pretty, but then so are many poisonous things :-)

I spent about 3 days trying to install win7 and/or winxp pro on our HP Stream. NOT possible. Even with the BIOS setup for legacy, HP highly suggested against it, and even said that if somehow you were able to get it on (and some people did) not likely many drivers would work The hardware rejects it. But I could install Linux on it without problem.  Needless to say, I gave the laptop to the wife, I wanted nothing to do with a machine I could not work with.

I did not notice that there was Troll written just on top of my prof. pic. Hey pete that's very unflattering...lol.

Not a rant at all. I always say the same things to my friends: "why'd you stick your d***k there? I don't use AV either (since 3 or 4 yrs) and the last malware that infected me was called Brontoka...in 2005 or 6.

I wanted to get your opinion on the stream. My boss wife has an old stream of 2015 (it's slow and low on space), I've been asked to refurbished the thing for their 8 year old. You said that you installed linux on it. What version of stream was it and what distro did you install flawlessly? might save me some time.

Thanks.

@meanmechanic LOL I thought you put Troll there LOL

personally I love the stream for what I do (as long as I don't game AAA stuff - but I mostly do web design and program - oh,ya theme for BB), but when I got it home the first day and saw W10 i groaned. So the first thing I did was put UBUNTU (gnome, Im not  a fan of unity, although it looks cool, call me old fashion), but hind site, I would put SolydK(KDE) or solydX(XFCE) its much more nicer. It's a sleeper, so not in the top 100 distro watch site.

been awhile, but from memory, you have to turn on legacy for the bios (after you fight with win 10 for your right to access the bios in the first place) and just for safe keeping don't format the whole drive as in case you want to go back (ew huh?) to it, it has a nice recovery partition.

After that it installs ok. But any other version of win, I could not get past the USB hardware issue. its all over the tube, and most the web. some people are able to make it work others are not. It is something to do with the steam not recognizing the drivers for the usb. it will boot from it, then suddenly forget its there - stupid frustrating!! After days of yelling at the pc god, i abandon the idea, and said "..here wife- here's a present - looky wiiiiinnnndows 10 uuuuuuuah"

And she scampered along with a smile on her face and a pretty blue tiny laptop. surprisingly thought, that thing can watch movies w/o a hitch.. very impressive, and the 3day battery is nice too - prob because it has no fan.

cheers
