First I'd like to thank Pitkon for setting me up, even though I looked like some kind of spammer robot...

Yup, my goal is to severely abuse my old craptop with Win8.1. I have been on an off surfing for close to a year here, others like Lite Step, Open/Classic Shell and other common shells. I've also gone off the deep end looking at Oberon, BumpTop and Xwindows also 3D, TUI, VUI and ZUIs. Of course most of the last 4 need a lot more power than my craptop has and/or are still being developed at colleges/universities. It's really wild what they want to the desktop. What the heck, if your going to play, fake it till ya break it.

I even pulled my old external HD out to do a full BU. Now I need to figure out the quickest way to get boot and factory partitions BU'ed. I think splitting the smaller stuff to DVD it might shorten the BU by half a day, maybe a full one......

If anyone has any experience or horror stories with Win8.1, I would be very interested in hearing about them. I'm sure I've missed things as only recently decided to start making changes.

Time to say hello-goodbye,

They let this loony out the gate!

Hello, greybeardbb.  I just got in the "gate" so to speak, very recently.  Welcome!

Your name brings to mind the pirates of yore.  Blackbeard, greybeard.  Everyone should be thankful there are no greenbeards, because that would likely spell bad clams.

I was a big fan of windows 8.1  Of course, I have yet to try 10, which I'm sure I'd like.  Currently on 7.  I set my forebears up with 8.1 though, because of the design simplicity.  It seemed more 'mac-like', simplicity and hiding the guts a few levels deeper than necessary to protect them from accidental abuse.

It sounds like you're looking to boot off an external hard drive?  Is it usb3, eSATA?  (or is it that you are using backups from the external and intend to use an internal laptop drive for the windows setup?)

I can't offer much in the way of help, personally, but once upon a time I was running 8.1 by a vxd (virtualized drive, real win installation, that is not a virtualized setup)  It was surprisingly easy to administer.  I'd do it again without question.

Hey parity_bit,

I can't say I was a pirate but I was in the US Navy. Guess the closest I got to a pirate was a drunken Halloween party at the EM club  :pirate:

I'm just using the external for BU. I'm just a fraidy cat because my craptop is my only pc capable of getting online. It's my 1st UEFI system and I've never got to play/destroy/learn with UEFI before. I'm using win8.1 because it's a hand me down from my daughter and win8.1 was there. It was an original win7 so I'm reading about WIMs, DISM and the like to figure out if I can go back to 7. I use DblCommader with the DiskInternals Reader plugin so I can see the other partitions. My biggest worries are figuring out which if any partition has win7 and not having the correct keys for 7. Crap! I just remembered my boot cds. I'm should be able to find a hirens or falcon4 somewhere around here! I'm doing WAY more research than I would usually do but destruction is NOT an option!

Ah for the days of fdisk, format, sys a: c:

The Navy sails the seven seas, so there's that in common.  But the Navy is for good, right?  And pirates can be 'scurvy dawgs' so maybe they are opposites, with the sea uniting them.  Avast, ye lubbers!

With WIMs you should certainly be able to install 7 either into a vxd, or a clean partition.  Don't worry about the key, you had it at one point.  7 reached the end of life, so as long as you owned it at one point, I wouldn't worry about registering, key codes, any of that rigamarole.  If it winds up being too much of an annoyance, there's a removal tool for legitimate use, so do as the pirates do on that one issue alone.  It's produced by NirSoft I think, and others and it will get rid of WAC or whatever it's called (window's authentication).

Yep, those days are still here, and preferred to some degree.  Hotkeys and cli's is the way to go.  Mice are for cats!  Very important on a leaky ship, but nothing beats the keyboard for efficiency sake  lol

Took me some time to reply - my apologies - but welcome aboard, grey.

You seem to be quite sane for a crazy man :)
