I had a bad experience when attempting to set up bbzero and bblean as shells alongside explorer on Windows 10 Technical Preview. When I pressed the "Set ShellOn as the Windows shell" button I got the error message "Failed to set data for shell". Foolhardy, I rebooted anyway, and - black screen. I had to then reboot and roll back to Windows 8.1, then re-install Windows 10 TP, then re-install bbzero. This time I used bbsetshell, and so far I'm having no problem booting into bbzero. Now, I don't know if my problem was due to setting up ShellOn incorrectly, or if there is really a problem using ShellOn 2 with Windows 10. I have used ShellOn years ago with Windows XP with no problem, but this time it didn't work for me. Has anyone seen that "Failed to set data for shell" error before with ShellOn?

I use ShellOn for over 10 years now, both on XP and 7. Works flawlessly, but I never tried it on Win 10. ShellOn works by tweaking the registry and in the few occasions where the system wouldn't set it as shell, I used regedit to edit the registry manually. Not sure how Win 10 works - maybe there's no registry as we know it - but if there is, editing it by hand should solve any issues.

This is due to the rollback feature in this build,It is coded into this build.and not a problem native to shell-on.I think this will be kept untill they make us pay for windows as a service with the final 10 builds at 7$ per month.Legal issues ensure that this revert to what you had if you don't pay up will remain.Person(s) unknown have been playing with the idea of a registry hack to use this to load 3rd party softwear like Blackbox as a shell choice...

Thanks for your replies, @pitkon and @scruffty. So, if it's something built into the Technical Preview of Windows 10 that prevents ShellOn from tweaking the Registry, how is it that bbsetshell can set bbzero as the shell? Maybe that's a trade secret of mojmir's...

Lol... No, it's not. My guess is, bsetshell managed to get to the Windows' registry, where ShellOn failed. Again, the best thing you can do is to manually tweak the registry. bsetshell is fine, but it won't catch crashes and it won't allow you to switch among different shells.

I think ShellOn assumes it has full Administrator rights, which was true for Win95 to WinXP pretty much always.

Also it probably wants to install bb as the default shell for every user.

 

It's either that or the registry key changed.

 

Solution: Just use bbsetshell to set shellon as your shell
